Learning Objectives:

  • To discuss the general principles when caring for a patient with a syringe pump.

  • To identify and understand medications and dose ranges most commonly used in a syringe pump.

  • To increase confidence in assembling and setting up the syringe pump correctly, discussing the common problems that arise and how to deal with them.

This learning event supports registered nurses to confidently set up and manage pumps, and understand commonly used medication that assists symptom management in palliative care. It may also be applicable to senior health care assistants whose role includes double-checking pump set up.
